Diamond plate makes up the texture of experience between events. A tread, almost invisible, it does not have the poetry of the sidewalk, nor the superstitions about its cracks. It would seem purely functional. It is very much like Kierkegaard's "Knight of Faith" whose grace is hidden in his invisibility, since the knight of faith is not a traditional hero whose travail can easily be communicated. "No heavenly glance or any other token of the incommensurable betrays him." Yet diamond plate is, in a sense, not just an analogy for, but the very medium of the (unmediatable) knight of faith, who "transforms the leap of life into a walk . . . to express the sublime in the pedestrian."
